Doubtful Sound FiordlandFiordland Photography Workshops. -  UPDATE

Doubtful Sound Fiordland.

(based in Te Anau) October 15-18 2010, 4 nights, Thursday 5pm – Monday 5pm. - Max 8 students. Accommodation and tuition $1890pp plus meals.

This workshop starts in Queenstown Friday and travels via the Mavora Lakes to our base for two nights in Te Anau.

We photograph Milford Sound on Saturday and then travel to Doubtful Sound for an over night stay on board the “Seafin”.

Return to Queenstown Monday afternoon. We plan to take all students in our vehicles.

The high-light of this trip will be the overnight on Doubtful Sound.

          Schedule:

  • Thursday 15
    5-7pm Introduction to the course, bring along five photographs to introduce yourself to your fellow photographers. These will be critiqued, and so the learning process begins.( Print or files.) Venue = 26 High View Terrace, Queenstown.
     
  • Friday 16
    9am Pick up from your hotel destination Te Anau- Via Mavora lakes and Mount Nicolas, packed lunch supplied.
    4pm Te Anau- Settle into your room.
    4.30-6.30pm Download and critique from the day.
    7.00pm Dinner – Restaurant in Te Anau (pay as you go).
    After dinner- Audio-visuals from Mike and Jackie, understanding composition and discussing the various landscapes that we will encounter the next day.
     
  • Saturday 17
    7.00 am First light photography of Lake Te Anau.
    8.00 Breakfast (Continental + eggs).
    9.30. Depart for Milford Sound. The road into Milford Sound is fantastic, so we will be stopping frequently along the way. Mirror Lakes, Eglington Valley, Homer Tunnel, The Chasm, Milford Sound….Packed lunch.
    3pm return to Te Anau.
    4.30-6.30pm Download and critique.
    7.00pm Dinner – Another restaurant in Te Anau, (pay as you go).
     
  • Sunday 18
    7.00 breakfast- (Continental + eggs).
    8.30 Depart for Manapouri.
    Your Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise starts in Manapouri, where Diane will welcome us and take us on a 45 minute boat ride across Lake Manapouri, New Zealand's most scenic lake, to West Arm at the head of the Lake Manapouri.

    At West Arm, you will be met by Chris, who will transport us over the mighty Wilmot Pass, a 40 minute drive by vehicle.
    You will enjoy the magnificent views of Doubtful Sound, (a great photo opportunity) before arriving at Deep Cove, (the head of Doubtful Sound) where the "Seafinn" is waiting for us. Chris now becomes our skipper, guide and chef, a man of many talents, he will provide you with an enjoyable and unforgettable experience as Seafinn winds its way around Doubtful Sound and its many arms on it's way out onto the open Tasman Sea while we make photographs.

    Catch your evening meal from the sea. Try filleting it too! Or catch a photograph of someone else trying. Many fish are abundant in the Fiordland waters, such as blue cod, sea perch, tarakihi, school groper and the occasional shark. In the evening, enjoy a hearty meal and look at your images from the day.
     
  • Monday 19
    Early morning shoot on the boat. Return trip to Manapouri.
    11.45 Manapouri to Queenstown.
    3.00-5.00pm Queenstown.
    Download and critique. We will demonstrate how to make a book from the weekends shoot.
    5pm- Drop off, back to your Hotel.

    What to bring:
  • A change of clothing in an overnight bag.
  • Comfortable shoes.
  • A water proof coat.
  • A warm jacket.
  • Insect repellent and sunscreen.
  • Camera could be good !
  • BYO - bring along your favourite bottle of choice. (wine/beer).
  • Five photographs to introduce yourself with on Friday night session, prints or digital files.
  • Clothing for cold / wet weather as well as sunny weather including a hat, waterproof walking boots.
  • Your camera gear, or trial our Canon 500D’s, sturdy tripod, camera charger, spare memory cards. We also have a few tripods that we can loan out, light travelling tripods are of almost no use. If your thinking about buying a tripod for the workshop contact us and we will give you our recommendations.

          What you will need to pay for:

  • Accommodation in Queenstown Thursday and Monday at least.
  • Lunches café style - Friday, Saturday and Monday - (pay as you eat).
  • Friday and Saturday dinners in Te Anau. This can be discussed by the group at the time.

          Costs include:

  • The whole group will travel from Queenstown to Te Anau- Milford and back in our 4 Wheel Drive Prados.
  • Two nights accommodation in Te Anau with continental breakfasts.
  • One Overnight Cruise on Doubtful Sound - http://www.doubtful-sound.com
  • All food (lunch, dinner and breakfast). Note: if you have dietary requirements, please advise on booking (e.g. vegetarian).
  • Fresh linen - Sheets, pillow case, towels & face cloth.
  • Bunk style accommodation on board.
  • Transfers from Manapouri to Doubtful Sound.
  • Cruise, over-night, on Doubtful Sound.
  • Fishing if you'd like to catch your own meal!.
  • Our aim is for you to leave the workshop satiated: knowing more about photography but what’s more important, knowing more about yourself and what photography is to you.   UPDATE
