Portraiture Photography Workshop  - 2010 August 20-22  -  Queenstown6
$640 for tuition plus lunches and dinner Saturday evening @ $35pp  UPDATE

This workshop will discuss environmental, street, candid and studio portraiture, in colour and black & white. It will cover composition, exposure, quality of light, camera operation, studio lighting.

The weekend will be full of looking, learning and discussing what makes a great portrait. We have a large library of books which we can all draw inspiration from. You should leave this workshop with the confidence to take your portraiture into the professional realm. We include discussion on pricing and marketing your photography.

What to bring- your camera equipment, tripod, laptop or downloading hard drive (if you plan to shoot Raw files), and your five portraits photographs that you have taken. Dress comfortably and warm for out doors, hat, and sunglasses. The weather-whatever the weather the workshops will run.

This is a guide to what happens, each workshop is unique in that the group has it’s own dynamics. After the Friday night’s session, the schedule maybe modified to suit the group. The workshops are about enjoying photography, and enjoying the company of other like-minded people, I encourage you to be open and relaxed.

Friday 3-5pm
Introduction to the course. Bring along five of your favourite photographs to introduce yourself to the group- preferably portrait images.

This is an opportunity to let us know what you want to learn and fine tune the schedule for the weekend.

Saturday
9.00am-10.00am
Refresher -Understanding your camera. Shutter speeds, aperture, using you camera with manual controls and aperture priority…what’s new in your DSLR  and how to use it. We will be shooting raw files Vs jpegs and showing you how to edit and process these.
10-10.30 Demonstration and practical followed by critique.

11.00am Morning tea

11.30 -Queenstown markets for practical : Topic, environmental portraiture/travel portraiture-
-Understanding available light
-Finding the best angle
-Pre-visualization
-What lens?
-What’s your intent behind the photograph?
What is the main subject in the photograph? Where does your eye go to in the photograph? Is the person dominant?
Keep it simple.

1.00pm-Lunch.

1.30pm- Critique and discussion from the morning’s photography. These critique sessions are an important part of the learning process. What is Portraiture? BW vs. colour. Types of portraiture, candid, formal, photojournalistic…

Why do we make portraits? Intent!
Controlling the light, bounced light, fill flash, moving the subject…..
Composition for portraiture.
3.00pm  Demonstration.

3.30pm - 5.00.pm  Portrait session, available light . This session is about understanding light quality/ quantity and direction, and how to manipulate this for ‘better’ portraits. Includes posing and directing your sitter to get the best from them.

5.00pm- Download and critique

6.00pm –8.00pm Dinner, BYO. Audio visuals by Mike Langford and Jackie Ranken.

Sunday 7.30am-8.30am
Queenstown Gardens for early morning light.. This will include, demonstrations and discussion about photographing groups. Understanding an looking at the quality of light, looking for suitable backgrounds and experience in being in control.
9.00am- Return to QCCP for a good coffee and toast

10.00am- critique from Queenstown Gardens shoot

11.00am- demonstration and practical- studio portraiture with a’ live’ model.

12.30pm Lunch

1.30 –2.30pm Practical, with all that you have learnt about photography and about each other. Make a considered portrait of each person in the group. Props will be available for use.
Using studio lights
Using interior available light, reflectors and back-grounds.
Using the creative controls of the camera, shutter speed, depth of field, focus, be creative!

2.30pm- afternoon tea

3.00 pm- Critique and demonstration on creating your own book. This will compose of images taken over the weekend.

4.00pm. Make a book from the images from the workshop.

4.30pm -Finish    UPDATE
