Mt Cook/Mackenzie Winter Workshop

Mount Cook & Mackenzie Country Photography Workshop

South Island, New Zealand

Join Jackie Ranken and Mike Langford for an immersive photography workshop in the spectacular Mount Cook and Mackenzie Country region of New Zealand’s South Island.

Dominated by Aoraki / Mount Cook and surrounded by glacial lakes, braided rivers and expansive tussock landscapes, this region offers photographers a powerful combination of grandeur and subtle detail. The clarity of light, dramatic weather shifts and vast open space make it one of New Zealand’s most compelling destinations for landscape photography.

This workshop is designed to strengthen both your technical confidence and your creative interpretation of large-scale alpine environments.

We follow the frost, ice and atmospherics in search of hoar frosts in this amazing time of year.

Teaching in-camera creative photography techniques: multiple exposures, monochrome and time laps ideas.

The Landscape of Mount Cook & Mackenzie

Mackenzie Country is defined by scale and atmosphere. Snow-capped peaks rise above turquoise lakes. Braided rivers carve intricate patterns through the valley floor. Golden tussock plains stretch beneath enormous skies.

During the workshop we explore:

  • Aoraki / Mount Cook and surrounding alpine vistas

  • Glacial lakes such as Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo

  • Braided river systems and aerial-style abstract compositions while looking straight down

  • Minimalist landscapes within vast open spaces

  • Early morning in the frost and twilight light landcapes

  • Intimate details within the wider alpine scene

This is a landscape that invites both expansive compositions and thoughtful simplification.

Our Teaching Approach

Photographing large-scale mountain environments can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. Our role is to help you distill the scene - to recognize what matters and compose with clarity.

We work alongside you in the field, offering guidance and demonstration while encouraging independent decision-making. Technical instruction is balanced with creative exploration, helping you respond personally to the landscape rather than simply recording it.

You will receive support in:

  • Composition

  • Managing dynamic range and challenging light

  • Long exposure techniques including time-laps when possible

  • Simplifying complex mountain scenes

  • Shooting in Monochrome

  • Exploring multiple exposure options

  • Creating a cohesive series of images

  • Strengthening your individual photographic voice

There is also time for image review and reflective discussion, supporting deeper learning beyond the moment of capture.

Who This Workshop Is For

The Mount Cook & Mackenzie Photography Workshop is suitable for enthusiastic photographers through to experienced practitioners wishing to refine their approach to landscape photography. A working knowledge of your camera is helpful, but curiosity, patience and openness to experimentation are equally important.

A Small Group Experience

Working in a small group allows for personal attention, thoughtful conversation and meaningful creative growth. The rhythm of the Mackenzie landscape — expansive, spacious and contemplative — supports both technical development and quiet reflection.

This workshop is an opportunity not only to photograph one of New Zealand’s most iconic alpine regions, but to deepen your understanding of how you see and respond to landscape.
